Post office here was established as Pigeon Roost, January 16, 1872. The name was changed to Rosine, June 10, 1873, in honor of Jennie Taylor McHenry, 1832-1914, a poet who wrote under the pen name of "Rosine." A collection of her poems was published. She was the wife of Henry D. McHenry, prominent lawyer and banker.

The town was incorporated September 15, 1873.
