In 1950, President Harry S. Truman dedicated Friendship International Airport. The State of Maryland purchased the airport in 1972 from Baltimore City for $36 million, later renaming it Baltimore/Washington International Airport. In 2005, it was renamed after Baltimore-Native Thurgood Marshall, the first African American U.S. supreme court justice.
BWI Marshall remains a leader in aviation and economic growth.
