A hot-blast charcoal iron furnace was established at the intersection of furnace and north furnace roads in 1841. Brothers Phillip and Samuel Small along with Christopher Geiger founded the furnace and named it after Phillip's wife, Sarah. The thriving community known as Furnace grew around the industry and included a mansion house, icehouse, general store, blacksmith, school, gristmill, dwellings, and a barn for mule teams.
