Inscription
Center of the Chesapeake Bay seafood industry in the late 19th/early 20th century, known as the "Seafood Capital of the World." Watermen settled the Somers Cove area in 1660s. Community prospered after discovery of Tangier Sound oyster beds in 1854. John W. Crisfield promoted 1866 railroad link to carry Bay produce to urban markets; town was renamed in his honor in 1874.
Busy port expanded on landfill of oyster shells.
