Jonathan Street is one of the oldest Black communities in Maryland with Asbury Methodist Church and Bethel/Ebenezer Ame Church established in the early nineteenth century. After the Civil War, Black owned businesses flourished creating a stable community. In the mid-twentieth century, the Harmon Hotel and The Ship Tea Room were listed in the "Green Book".

This guide provided African Americans safe places to patronize during Jim Crow-era segregation.
