Inscription

In the 19th century this industrial village developed between the Grafton Turnpike and the banks of Mill Brook. East Grafton was once known as Bungtown, a name derived from an accident involving an overturned cart of failed barrel stoppers or 'bungs.' At peak production, one could find shingles, clapboards, cider, harnesses, axes, paint, woolens, bobbins, carriages, and coffins made here, powered by several mill ponds.

Today, the carding mill, axe factory, and harness shop still stand.
