Inscription

Called "Hard Beach" by the first settlers. During the War of 1812 Commodore Decatur with three ships "United States," "Macedonia" and "Hornet" lay at anchor off this sand spit. Eight times in two centuries, storms tore through here and cut Oysterponds off from the mainland.
