Created in 1903 as the Division of Public Records in the State Library, the State Archives safeguards and provides public access to records of state and local government and historical manuscripts. Dating from 1681, original records and papers housed here document the history of state agencies, individuals, places, events, and organizations.
In 1945, the Archives became a part of the newly formed Historical and Museum Commission.
