This site of one acre was given in 1837 for use for a public school by COL. JOHN BLOUNT MILLER (1782-1851), Lieutenant-Colonel in War of 1812, a public-spirited citizen and advocate of education; attorney at law, orator, writer, founder of Sumterville Library Society and Baptist Church; first notary public (1805) and commissioner in equity (1817-51) for Sumter District.
