Enslaved at birth in Rutherford County, Tenn., Callie Guy House led one of the earliest reparations movements, the National Ex-Slave Mutual Relief, Bounty, and Pension Association. Founded in 1894 by House and Isaiah Dickerson, the organization petitioned Congress to grant compensation to and provide aid for the burial expenses of formerly enslaved people.
Their efforts led to the first major reparations lawsuit, Johnson v. McAdoo in 1916. Her home stood near this site.
