On April 24, 1880, Nashville began a month-long celebration of 100 years since the signing of the Cumberland Compact. Starting with a 100-gun salute at the Capitol, a procession of dignitaries, veterans, businesses and community groups paraded to the Centennial Exposition building here. The evening featured speeches, music and a grand display of fireworks.
Vendors sold Centennial Medals bearing the likeness of the recently dedicated Capitol statue of Pres. Andrew Jackson.
