Located 1100 Clay Street, North Nashville High School opened in 1940. Designed by Hart and Russell, the building was constructed with funding from the Public Works Administration, and featured carved stone panels by sculptor Puryear Mims. The first class graduated in 1941. Four principals served North High: J.H. Noel, W.J. Mullins, L.L. Carnes, and R.W. Elliot.

The final commencement was held June 8, 1978. North High was demolished in 1987.
