Inscription
Born in New Hampshire in 1807, he moved to Wheeling and worked as a merchant and as freight agent for the B&O. He was appointed colonel of the 1st WV (90-day regiment) in 1861 and led the unit at Philippi, where he was seriously wounded. He was promoted to brigadier general, breveted major general, 1864, and captured, 1865.
Died July 16, 1891; buried Arlington National Cemetery.
