Born on December 14, 1882, in Montgomery, WV, Lavinia Norman later attended Howard University in Washington DC. In 1908, with eight other students, she founded Alpha Kappa Alpha, the oldest Greek-lettered organization for African-American women. Norman taught at Douglass High School in Huntington for 40 years.
