Formed from Tazewell, 1858. Named for James McDowell, governor of Virginia from 1843 to 1846. County is famous for production of bituminous coal. This county originally had four acres of coal for every acre of its land surface.

Formed in 1850 from Logan. Named for the Wyoming tribe of Indians. First settler was John Cooke; first permanent settlement, Oceana. County has vast areas of smokeless coal. Among its features is Castle Rock.
