At Kessler's Cross Lanes (5 Mi. E.), Aug. 26, 1861 and at Carnifex Ferry (7 Mi. E.), Sept. 10, 1861, Battles occurred between Confederates under Gen. J. B. Floyd and Union troops under Col. E. B. Tyler and Gen. W. S. Rosecrans.
