Inscription

Named for the river, called by the Iroquois the "Beautiful River. Visited by LaSalle in 1669-1670. Once part of the Northwest Territory. Settled at Marietta, 1788. Admitted to the Union, 1803. Home of eight United States Presidents.

Formed in 1776 from West Augusta. Named for the river which bears an Indian name meaning "Beautiful River." Scene of last battle of the Revolution, 1782. Visited by La Salle, Celoron, Gist, Washington, and later explorers.
