Formed in 1851 from Ritchie, Tyler, and Wood. Named for James Pleasants, governor of Virginia, 1822-1825, and United States Senator. This county is in the heart of the oil and gas producing territory and has many large wells.

Named for the river, called bythe Iroquois the "Beautiful River." Visited by La Salle in 1669-1670. Once part of the Northwest Territory. Settled at Marietta, 1788. Admitted to the Union, 1803. Home of eight United States Presidents.
